Thursday after Ash Wednesday - Will We Choose Life or Death?

Today's Reading
Moses said to the people:
"Today I have set before you life and prosperity, death and doom. If you obey the  commandments of the LORD, your God, which I enjoin on you today, loving Him, and walking in His ways, and keeping His commandments, statutes and decrees, you will live and grow numerous, and the LORD, your God, will bless you in the land you are entering to occupy.

If, however, you turn away your hearts and will not listen, but are led astray and adore and serve other gods,  I tell you now that you will certainly perish;  you will not have a long life on the land that you are crossing the Jordan to enter and occupy.

I call heaven and earth today to witness against you:  I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse.

Choose life, then, that you and your descendants may live, by loving the LORD,  your God, heeding His voice, and holding fast to Him.

For that will mean life for you, a long life for you to live on the land that the LORD swore He would give to your fathers Abraham, Isaac and Jacob."

Deuteronomy 30:15-20
Reflection
In today's reading we hear from Moses who is standing before the people and making it clear to them. He does not give them many options but narrows it down so that set before the Israelites is the choice between two realities: life or death. "Choose life then" he pleads with them.  Christ does the same for us each day.

Will you choose life? No one willingly and with full knowledge would choose death,  however, many of us sit comfortably on our reception of the sacraments, the good deeds we perform, or the profession of faith we make on a weekly basis. In the bigger picture it seems, in fact, as if we are choosing life. We feel as if we are doing what we are supposed to be doing and living out our faith in Jesus. However, we must not fall into the habit of settling for a comfortable life. We were created for so much more and God wants us to reach our full potential.

Lent is the time to slow down, dive deeper and take a closer look at the decisions we are making. Our lives are made up of thousands of choices, some bigger than others. We are faced every day with this choice of life and death. Hit the snooze button? Eat a donut for breakfast?  Ignore those around me? Waste time at work?  There are so many ways that we choose death rather than life. Moses challenges us to choose life, that is, choose Christ in every single moment of our life so that we may truly live, "by loving the Lord, your God, heeding His voice, and holding fast to Him. " Today, try and keep track of every single decision you make, big or small, and before you go to bed review where you chose life and where you chose death. Strive to always choose life and God in the days to come.
