Mass Cards & Prayer Intentions
It has long been a custom in the Catholic Church to have a Mass offered for someone who is deceased or for a special intention (i.e. for the recovery of one who is ill, an anniversary or birthday, for a special prayer). The priest then makes it his intention during Mass to remember the particular request made.

Mass Cards and Prayer Intentions
The tradition of offering Masses for others, particularly the dead, originates in the very early Church. Inscriptions discovered on tombs in Roman catacombs of the second century evidence this practice: for example, the epitaph on the tomb of Abercius (d. 180), Bishop of Hieropolis in Phrygia, begs for prayers for the repose of his soul." - Fr. William Saunders on Mass Intentions
