Cremation of the body is an acceptable practice among Catholic faithful. However, the teaching of the Church still clearly prefers the burial or internment of the body as more in keeping with the dignity of the human body as a temple of the Holy Spirit; a body that was washed and anointed in baptism and confirmation and fed with the Body and Blood of Christ.
If cremation is chosen, it is preferable that this occurs after the Funeral Mass. We recognize that this would be an added expense. Therefore, if it would create an undue financial burden, please know that your parish family will respect your wishes and will fully cooperate with your plans.
How cremation is implemented in Catholic funeral services is specified in the Funeral Liturgy section.
